To elevate the occasion, he enlisted the Seaweld Band, an oil and gas servicing company musical group comprised primarily of expatriates, which not only provided entertainment but also set a foundation for what would burgeon into a grand celebration of culture and music.
In 1996, recognizing the potential for a larger cultural display, Mr. Ekpenyong broadened the scope of the event by inviting cultural troupes from Calabar and Oron, integrating traditional performances with the already vibrant atmosphere of the Funfair. This addition marked the introduction of cultural elements that would become a hallmark of the festival, enriching the experience for attendees.
The years between 1997 and 1999 signaled a period of innovation with the inclusion of the Memories Band from Calabar, which garnered acclaim as one of Nigeria’s best contemporary bands. This phase also saw the influence of notable DJs like E-Boy Disco, Mbisco Sound, and Dolly Popman, the latter of whom is recognized for his pivotal role in Mixx FM 88.5. Their contributions helped to diversify the musical offerings at the Funfair, attracting an even larger audience.
The event continued to grow and flourish, and in 2002, it marked a significant turning point when ExxonMobil became the first official sponsor of the Funfair, bringing in popular artists such as P-Square, Don Jazzy, Bracket, and Feladay. This partnership not only amplified the event’s prestige but also ushered in modern elements that made Ibeno Beach Funfair a must-attend experience. The year 2023 saw Timaya headlining the event, further solidifying its reputation as a premier gathering of musical talent in the region.
