MR. SAMUEL THOMAS EKPEYOUNG.

Founder, Ibeno Beach Funfair.

Ibeno Beach Funfair, a celebrated annual event, traces its origins back to 1991, initiated by Mr. Samuel Thomas Ekpenyong, who at the time was employed as a contract staff with ExxonMobil, now known as Seplat. The inception of the Funfair began as a modest birthday celebration on December 26th, where Mr. Ekpenyong invited a few colleagues and friends to join him at Ibeno Beach which was nothing short of a a small water front with a bush track as the only access from Iwuokpom village in present Ibeno LGA.

To elevate the occasion, he enlisted the Seaweld Band, an oil and gas servicing company musical group comprised primarily of expatriates, which not only provided entertainment but also set a foundation for what would burgeon into a grand celebration of culture and music.

In 1996, recognizing the potential for a larger cultural display, Mr. Ekpenyong broadened the scope of the event by inviting cultural troupes from Calabar and Oron, integrating traditional performances with the already vibrant atmosphere of the Funfair. This addition marked the introduction of cultural elements that would become a hallmark of the festival, enriching the experience for attendees.

The years between 1997 and 1999 signaled a period of innovation with the inclusion of the Memories Band from Calabar, which garnered acclaim as one of Nigeria’s best contemporary bands. This phase also saw the influence of notable DJs like E-Boy Disco, Mbisco Sound, and Dolly Popman, the latter of whom is recognized for his pivotal role in Mixx FM 88.5. Their contributions helped to diversify the musical offerings at the Funfair, attracting an even larger audience.

The event continued to grow and flourish, and in 2002, it marked a significant turning point when ExxonMobil became the first official sponsor of the Funfair, bringing in popular artists such as P-Square, Don Jazzy, Bracket, and Feladay. This partnership not only amplified the event’s prestige but also ushered in modern elements that made Ibeno Beach Funfair a must-attend experience. The year 2023 saw Timaya headlining the event, further solidifying its reputation as a premier gathering of musical talent in the region.

Mr. Samuel Ekpenyong a seasoned administrator recognised the need of teamwork and positive partnership gathered like minds to help him interprete the vision hence what we know as Ibeno Tourism Organization was formed.

Over the years, with the support of Ibeno tourism Organization the Funfair has evolved into the largest beach party in Southern Nigeria, attracting thousands who come to revel in unforgettable performances by a host of prominent musicians and comedians, including Duncan Mighty, 2Baba, Oritshefemi, Patoranking, I Go Die, and Basket Mouth. Each year, attendees are treated to a spectacular array of entertainment that celebrates both local and national talents.

The formation of unique competitions such as the Mr. Macho competition and the Miss Beach pageant added an element of friendly rivalry and community engagement to the Funfair. Notably, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ekpenyong popularly called (Iraq) a former House of Assembly member from Ini State constituency and now an honorary special adviser to the governor on Special Projects, emerged as one of the early winners of the Mr. Macho competition, illustrating the event’s community roots.

The Akwa Ibom State government, through the office of the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, has over the years recognized the significance of Ibeno Beach Funfair, providing valuable support over the years. Notable figures, including Senator Akon Eyakenyin, currently the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bassey Essien, and Hon. Etim Uno, have played vital roles in championing the event, emphasizing its importance as a cultural and tourism initiative.

Today, Ibeno Beach Funfair stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the good people of Ibeno and in extension Akwa Ibom State, celebrating unity, entertainment, and the vibrant local customs that continue to draw visitors from both within and beyond Nigeria. Its legacy, rooted in the vision of Mr. Ekpenyong, has transformed into an enduring symbol of community and festivity, anticipated by many each year.

Samuel Alexander Bill

Known for Christian missionary work in Africa and Founding the Qua Iboe Church.

Bill was raised in Ballymacarrett Presbyterian Church, east Belfast, but was most notably associated with Island Street Belfast City Mission Hall. His interest in missionary work was sparked by a visit to Belfast by Dwight L. Moody and Ira D.
Sankey in 1874.

He attended the Harley Missionary Training College in London, then under the leadership of Henry Grattan Guinness; and travelled to Nigeria to commence a work amongst the Ibeno people in 1887. The mission base was founded on the banks of the
Qua Iboe River, and this base gave the name to the independent interdenominational mission that Bill founded in 1890.

Bill was seen as a practical missionary, learning the Efik language, working with the Annang people, planting crops and running a trading station.

Bill was a contemporary of Mary Slessor. Although not as well known as his Scottish counterpart, Bill’s legacy is twofold.
First, many historians of the Irish evangelical missionary movement note that he was one of the most influential men of
his time, inspiring many in Ireland to overseas Christian service.

The Qua Iboe Mission grew to be one of the largest and most successful missions in the UK. Secondly, the church that he founded, the Qua Iboe Church has grown to considerable
proportions, numbering at least 2 million strong in 2007, and his memory is still strongly revered by many Nigerian Christians today. A theological college at Abak in southern Nigeria is named in his honour.

Looking forward seeing you.
